Committee description:

BEGINNER COMMITTEE

Welcome (double) delegates to DISEC, the Disarmament and International Security Committee! DISEC is one of the central committees within the United Nations, addressing issues related to disarmament and global security, as the name suggests. The committee serves as a platform where member states discuss the proliferation of weapons and the challenges posed by emerging security threats in a rapidly changing world. I hope we can engage in productive and meaningful debate while considering the needs and goals of the countries you represent. As the world feels increasingly unstable, the importance of your debate in this committee cannot be understated.

Topic 1: Security or Space Lasers? Preventing the Weaponization of Outer Space

The weaponization of outer space clashes with the idea of peaceful exploration and scientific advancement. Should we impose stringent arms control measures and establish a total ban on military weapons or activity in space? To consider this, countries must weigh their desire to promote national security and advancement against the possibility of an arms race on our final frontier. What is considered a space weapon? Are their benefits to allowing defensive capabilities? What is the outcome if we do not act? I invite you to consider all of these questions as we debate this topic.

Topic 2: Artificial Intelligence and Armed Conflict: Controlling the Rise of Autonomous Weapons

Controlling the rise of autonomous weapons is increasingly urgent as advances in artificial intelligence blur the line between human decision-making and machine-led military actions. While taking the human out of the battlefield is a clear benefit, autonomous weaponry removing the human component of thought and decision can pose a serious risk, both to combatants and civilians. Delegates should consider the fine balance between scientific advancement and human risk when evaluating their country's position on this issue. How can the DISEC ensure that these weapons are controlled, regulated, and used in accordance with international law and standards, while allowing defensive and technological progress?
