Committee description:
BEGINNER COMMITTEE
Welcome to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization! UNESCO's mission is to contribute to the building of a culture of peace, the eradication of poverty, sustainable development and intercultural dialogue. This committee will challenge delegates to think critically about the global responsibilities we share in protecting cultural heritage and promoting truthful, accessible information in an age of rapid digital change. The chair is thrilled to lead this committee in the first iteration of the YMUN South Asia secretariat, and he is committed to cultivating an inclusive and productive discussion environment.
Topic 1: Promoting the Repatriation of Cultural Artifacts to Countries of Origin
Across the world, countless cultural artifacts have been displaced during periods of colonial occupation, illicit trafficking, or foreign conflict. Many of these objects reside major institutions far from the communities and nations that cherish them as vital parts of their heritage. Delegates will explore UNESCO's role in facilitating ethical and timely repatriation, promote international cooperation, and support source countries in preserving, studying, and exhibiting their cultural heritage. This topic challenges participants to address both legal and moral considerations in the global restitution movement.
Topic 2: Combatting Disinformation and Misinformation through Media and Information Literacy
The rapid spread of disinformation and misinformation poses a growing threat to social cohesion, democratic processes, and public trust in the media. In response, UNESCO has championed Media and Information Literacy (MIL) as a vital tool to empower individuals to critically analyze content, verify sources, and engage responsibly with digital media. Delegates will explore how UNESCO can strengthen international collaboration to support journalist training, public education campaigns, and policy reforms that promote information integrity. This topic invites discussion on how MIL can be used to equip both media professionals and the public with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate today’s complex information landscape.
